An iconic film just as powerful today as it was in 2000
Released on May 5th, 2000, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator made its US debut, starring Russell Crowe who played General Maximus: a powerful figure reduced to slavery after being betrayed by his rivals, and climbed his way back to triumph as a gladiator. This heroic tale of revenge was not only an influential film for its time, it was said to be responsible for the re-emergence of ancient Greek and Roman culture in entertainment, influencing popular shows such as Rome.
One of Ridley’s most successful films, Gladiator debuted as the second highest-grossing film of 2000, while claiming multiple awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Crowe and 3 other Oscars at the 73rd Academy Awards.
