A new breed of director, Neill Blomkamp has harnessed the powers of technology, art and creativity to offer the world exciting imagery that simply used to be impossible. Garnering his exceptional CG skills in an intelligent and specific manner, his forte is creating pure photo-real visualizations of concepts that can’t be photographed, so they must spring directly from his imagination.

Recognising that filmmaking is as organic as it is artificial, Neill has merged the two seamlessly, making a hybrid that feels unexpectedly authentic. He enjoys creating great atmosphere in a spot where the concept is not only unique but also slightly bizarre.

In 2004, Neill was recognized as ‘One of the Top Five Directors to Watch’ at the First Boards Awards, featured in the ‘Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase’ at Cannes, and short-listed at the ‘Shark Awards.’

In 2005, Neill received the award for ‘Outstanding VFX in a Commercial’ for ‘Citroen-Alive with Technology’ at the VES awards in Los Angeles. He has since been featured in Shots, Shoot, Campaign, and Creativity magazine, in addition to winning multiple awards at London’s ‘BTAA’ show. Neill has also directed three spots for Gatorade’s popular “Rebirth” campaign.     

Neill’s short film Alive in Joburg became a cult Internet phenomenon, garnering hundreds of thousands of hits. The short’s success led to its expansion into a feature film. District 9, Neill’s highly successful feature debut.
