Danish director Casper Balslev was trained in documentary and street photography. He brings a well-honed ability to document chance interactions and spontaneity to advertising. Most recently, he directed “Collected Experiences” for Royal Danish Theatre, a behind the scenes commercial about the intense preparation of theatre performances. The film, brought to life by riveting shots of the theatre ensemble, was praised by media tastemakers, including Adweek and David Reviews.
Balslev developed his keen eye for photography early while he was assisting his aerial photographer father with his work. He went on to pursue a photojournalism degree at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, and was working at a newspaper in Copenhagen when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Balslev immediately dropped everything, flew to America, and spent five days shooting photographs in the deserted city of New Orleans. His resulting portfolio of large-format landscape portraits, Nawlins, won him a coveted spot at the National Gallery Copenhagen’s annual Young Danish Photography exhibition and was curated at galleries internationally.
After graduating, Balslev turned his passion to music videos, creating work for such diverse artists as Josef Salvat, Marina & the Diamonds, Ladyhawke, the Presets and Seinabo Sey. His dynamic and engaging visual sensibility appears in spots he has directed for Akvavit, Royal Beer, Fitness World and Volkswagen. Balslev’s branded short for fashion label Hans Kjøbenhavn won a Cannes Lion in 2013 as well as a spot in Saatchi’s New Directors Showcase. The Hans Kjøbenhavn film was also honored with a Gold for Best Direction at Eurobest. And his photo diary Indecisive Hollywood has shown at galleries internationally.
