“Meet Walter” Short for Alien: Covenant Directed By Luke Scott

April 4, 2017

“Meet Walter” introduces fans to Walter, the world’s most advanced synthetic companion, created to serve.

20th Century Fox continues to enthrall fans of Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated film, Alien: Covenant, with the release of its in-world branded short, “Meet Walter.”

The centerpiece of Alien: Covenant’s #MeetWalter campaign introduces Walter (played by Michael Fassbender), the world’s most advanced synthetic android companion designed to help achieve a better human experience. Each model is individually calibrated to serve its owner’s unique set of needs and preferences. The latest synthetic android contains intelligence powered by AMD, Ryzen and Radeon, and manufactured by the film’s fictional corporation Weyland-Yutani.

The short was conceived by Ridley Scott and 3AM, directed by Luke Scott and produced with brand partner AMD. “Partnering with AMD, one of the world’s leading technology companies, for our film’s ‘Meet Walter’ campaign aligned perfectly with our vision of the incredible potential of AI that Michael so wonderfully brings to life through Alien: Covenant’s Walter,” said Ridley Scott. “In AMD we have a partner at the forefront of developing and implementing artificially intelligent technologies, showcasing where the future of AI may well be heading. Bringing AMD into our longstanding collaboration with 20th Century Fox on the Alien films is inspiring and exciting.”

The short made its theatrical debut on March 10th at a special 10pm SXSW screening of Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi horror film, Alien (1979). The celebrated filmmaker was on hand to present Alien alongside the Covenant cast members Michael Fassbender and Danny McBride, and gave the audience a sneak peek of scenes from Alien: Covenant and the “Meet Walter” short in its entirety.

In an interview with Fast Company, Luke Scott breaks down the inspiration for “Meet Walter”:

I took a lot of reference in the bio-medical world about 3D printing limbs and organs, going down to the molecular level about how Walter is produced from a genetic level and grown traditionally in an artificial womb, or is he—is it—created as an adult version, and then the information is implanted via the AMD chip? We decided he was an adult, and 3D printed an exo-skeleton. There was a desire to put red and fleshy stuff in there, and we said, ‘No, no, no,’ to the designer. ‘You can’t do that.’ This goes back to 1979 and Ash, he was all white liquid and weird organic milky fluid. So we had to take the technology out of it.

#MeetWalter has stuck a chord with the press. AdAge calls the short film a “beautiful, and eerie branded content film” while entertainment trades like The Hollywood Reporter comment that “Meet Walter” perfectly “shows off Michael Fassbender’s creepy Android side.”

“Meet Walter” follows the release of the chilling action-packed trailers for Alien: Covenant; last month’s online release of the Covenant crew photo featuring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Danny McBride and Billy Crudup; and “Prologue: Last Supper,” the official prologue short to Alien: Covenant, which introduced the crew of the mission as they gather for a final meal before entering cryosleep.
