This past weekend, Scott Free Productions and RSA Films’ Director Jake Scott premiered American Woman at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Princess of Wales Theater, introducing the story of one woman’s efforts to navigate the nightmare of losing her teenage daughter, and having to raise her infant grandson over a period of 11 years.

The new feature film stars Sienna Miller, Aaron Paul, Christina Hendricks, Will Sasso & more, who have been sharing their personal experiences, emotions and motivations for bringing the heart-wrenching story from script to screen.

When asked by Variety about connecting with the script, Sienna Miller answered, “This thing happens very rarely, where I’m reading something and I have just an intuitive understanding of the person…I think it is just a very potent representation of what it is to be a woman, and so I fell in love with her.”

Early reviews have been rolling in praising her performance, saying “Sienna Miller offers a beautiful, agile performance that would by itself justify the film’s existence.” (via Hollywood Reporter)

The Hollywood Reporter article continues, concluding “Miller’s witty and wide-ranging performance grounds the picture, and convinces us she’s ready for the bombshells American Woman drops on her near the end.”

Director Jake Scott shared his thoughts on why he wanted to share this story in an interview with Deadline, “It’s just connection. You connect to the material, you connect to the character…There’s a realism about it that was really attractive to me. I had to do it.”

Below is a short clip from American Woman, taking place three days after Deb’s (Sienna Miller) daughter vanishes.

American Woman was executive produced by Ryan Stowell (Scott Free Productions), Shea Kammer, Brad Ingelsby, Joseph Ingrassia, and Erika Olde. And produced by Ridley Scott, Kevin Walsh, and Michael Pruss of Scott Free Productions and Brad Feinstein from Romulus Entertainment.
