Sam Mendes’ ‘1917’ has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, joining nominations from BAFTA, DGA, PGA, WGA and VES, along with Golden Globe and AFI wins.
The also secured nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Original Screenplay, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Original Score, Sound Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling,
The first world war drama, which stars young British actors George MacKay (Captain Fantastic, Pride) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones, Blinded by the Light), follows two soldiers tasked with crossing no-man’s land to call off a British attack which could save thousands of lives.
Working with cinematographer Roger Deakins, Sam created ‘1917’ to give the impression of one continuous take, plunging the viewer into the trenches alongside the soldiers.
Rounding up the British cast are Colin Firth, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Richard Madden.
